Both of the pictures come from "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens.
The first picture is an example of active verb."Mr. Wickfield" is the doer and "old and unhappy" is the reciever.
The second picture is an example of passive verb. " Uriah Heep" is the reciever and "us" is the doer.

Dicky, you are close to correct; the first example indeed has a doer but no receiver - do you remember transitive and intransitive verbs?

In the second example, Heep is the receiver, but what is the doer?

David Copperfield is perhaps my favorite book of Charles Dickens. I read the original, unabridged version two years ago.
